A message of integrity and hope for meeting planners

The annual convention and expo of the National Business Travel Association kicked off last night in San Diego with inspirational words from a real-life hero, and a splendid reception held outdoors in the warm Southern California evening. This show brings together corporate travel professionals, meeting and event planners, and travel and event technology vendors.

Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III gave the opening keynote, a message of what leadership, integrity, and excellence mean to him. It was a sober, yet hopeful note to begin the convention, especially in our tough economic times.

I think meetings planners can take something from Captain Sully's speech. He noted that communication between teams, realistic optimism about what can be achieved, and unbending focus on excellence produce real results, especially if adhered to day after day after day.

On January 15, 2009, Capt. Sully and his crew's readiness were tested, and they passed, pardon the pun, with flying colors.

When you hold meetings and events, do you hold to a high standard, or do you accept mediocrity? How do you provide maximum value to your attendees, sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, suppliers, and team members? How do you deal with unforeseen challenges, whether they occur pre-event, on-site, or post-event?

We'd love to hear how you deal with challenges in your meetings practice. Certain Software is at booth 504 this year, so if you are attending this year's NBTA 09, please visit us.
